Pink Floyd Birthday Cake

My husband’s birthday is the day before his mom’s birthday.  So the question is…do you make them two individual cakes or one giant cake to share???

This year, I went with the giant cake to share.  It was giant because the cake served at least 20 people, but there were only 6 of us celebrating that night.  It’s always better to go too big than too small, especially when it involves dessert, right?!

So, what would a man and his mom have in common?  How do you make one cohesive cake design for 2 totally different people?  She’s into fashion, wine, and shopping; he’s into television, the PS3, and movies.  But I lucked out because they’re both huge fans of the classic rock band Pink Floyd!  So a Pink Floyd-themed cake it was!

The 6-inch round and 8-inch square cakes were covered in black fondant.  The top tier was decorated to replicate the Dark Side of the Moon album cover, and the bottom tier was decorated like The Wall album cover.  The cake was topped by a “Happy Birthday” floating spray and some black ribbon roses.

Each of them got to choose a cake and filling flavor.  Adam chose Banana Spice Cake with Chocolate Fudge filling, and Leona chose Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Fudge filling.  Yum!
