Meet the Cake Doctor
Melanie has been decorating cakes since 2008. She discovered her passion during her graduate studies at the University of Florida. Ironically, she was pursuing a Ph.D. in biomedical research, studying obesity. As a stress reliever, she began by taking Wilton Method courses at Michael’s Craft Stores and was offered a teaching position the month after she finished the courses. Because her thirst for knowledge is not easily quenched, she scoured the public library shelves for cake decorating books and learned more advanced techniques, like extension work and gum paste flowers, on her own.
Melanie thrives in competition, and within 5 years she had won 4 Best of Shows, eight 1st Places, one 2nd Place, two 3rd Place, 1 Decorators’ Choice, and 2 Crowd’s Favorite prizes. She has also been published in many magazines and newsletters. In August 2013, she earned the prestigious title of Certified Master Sugar Artist (CMSA), which is held by only a few dozen others worldwide. Most recently, she was a competitor on the Food Network’s Winner Cake All in 2019.
When Melanie is not elbow-deep in buttercream, she enjoys being Mommy to her children Mikaela, Hailee, and Andrew. She is also proud to be a baker for Icing Smiles, a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child.
