Last weekend, we had the honor of making a luau-themed cake for an office family picnic. The office hosting the get-together happened to be Mel’s husband’s office…but that’s just a minor detail. *wink*
In any event, the cake was fun to make! They gave us free reign to decorate it however we pleased. And we gave them this tantalizing sneak peek on Facebook.
We’ve been seeing a LOOOOOOT of Mickey Mouse birthday cakes lately. And, while we love Mickey, we were thrilled when Natasa asked for a Minnie Mouse cake! Alright! We’re talking sweet, girly, polka dots, bows, and PINK!
Mickey Mouse is “in” for 1st birthday parties! We created another one for Morgan’s birthday party on July 7th, and you can see her sneak peek on Facebook here.
You may recognize Morgan’s birthday cake. Her Mom chose the design from another cake she’d seen on our website. But she added the adorable Minnie & Mickey cupcakes to her order!

Her cake was based on the birthday party invitation with lime green and two tones of pink, and the owl topper was replicated directly from the invitation!
We love when people give us creative license to do whatever “floats our boat” when we decorate their cakes or cookies. Jessica asked us to make her baby shower favors and she sent us a few ideas as well as her invitations and shower colors. But she was open to all of our ideas and trusted us to make something fantastic.
So we made a standing cookie favor! Mel “pinned” this on Pinterest long ago and has been wanting to try it (do you follow Mel on Pinterest?) so this was the perfect opportunity!
‘Tis the season for graduations so we expected to do a few high school and/or college graduation cakes, but this request threw us for a loop! Callie’s boyfriend Andres was graduating from the Police Academy and she was throwing a surprise party for him! How fun!
But what should a Police Academy graduation cake look like? Callie wanted the cake to look like a gun case with lots of sugar accessories – a gun, a magazine, his new police shield, handcuffs, and bullets.
Last month, we had the pleasure of creating graduation cakes for 3 high school seniors. All three students wanted their cakes to focus on their bright futures so they all featured graduation hats with decorated mortar boards and their respective college pennants.
Having a baby is great. Aside from all the snuggles, kisses, giggles, and high-fives I get to enjoy each day, there are other great bonuses too. Like getting to go to 1st birthday parties! Between now and September, I figure Mikaela will go to about 10 first birthday parties!
Perhaps she’s popular! Or perhaps her Mommy just makes the cakes…but who cares?! First birthday parties are great! And they’re all so different – so if you’re planning one, keep an eye on this blog for some great ideas.

Birthday season is here for our family! All of my daughter’s playmates are turning 1 year old between now and October so brace yourself for quite a few 1st birthday cakes in the upcoming weeks. They’ll vary from rainbow colors to baseball to garden-themed to cutesy owls. I can’t wait!
